Annual Residency Retreat

Each year we have 6 new residents, and their families and/or significant others join our large family. So every year in September or October the program sponsors a retreat for all residents to foster team building, social interaction, and a little learning. Families and significant others are invited to participate in any or all of the activities.  This years theme was..."the day we learned to COPE!"

This year residents and spouses/significant others were divided into 3 teams by residency year with each team having a few faculty ringers added on to slow them down.  We met on a Saturday morning at the local Boy Scout Council camp in Ashtabula.  There we were introduced to the COPE (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience) course, in which each of our three teams worked with two COPE instructors to face and solve a series of challenges over the course of the day.

Some challenges had mental puzzle-solving aspects, some had physical aspects, and most had both.  A highlight for each team was getting everyone up and over a twelve foot-high vertical wall.  Another was the "trust fall" in which you are caught by team members as you let yourself fall backwards off a ledge.  The weather was perfect, no one was injured, everyone had fun, and each team got to know each other better outside the usual medical care arena.  Food for lunch was a great mix of sandwiches, salad and cookies from Panera.

This was the first time we had tried this for our retreat, but it was so successful that we are planning to repeat the format every three years so that each resident class has the chance to experience it.

Following the retreat, the residents organized their own get-together at one of the resident's homes.

Annual Graduation Luncheon

Every year the Center for Family Medicine staff celebrate with the graduating residents by holding a luncheon.  All CFM staff contribute to the luncheon by sharing their ideas for a graduation theme, decorating the conference room  and/or bringing their favorite dish.

There is a “roast” for each graduating resident.  Every year is different, as we have an MC who performs skits and interesting facts about the graduating residents.  The graduating residents, in turn, share their appreciation to the faculty and staff.

Annual Holiday Get-Together

This year's Holiday Gathering was held at the AquaMarine Party Center in Avon Lake, Ohio. Santa dropped in with gifts for all the kids!  It was a relaxing, yet fun evening for all.
