Patient Rights & Responsibilities

Your Rights as a Patient:

  • To be cared for with concern and respect.
  • To be informed about your diagnosis and treatment from your doctor.
  • To know the name of the doctor taking care of you.
  • To receive information about your care so that you can make informed decisions and ask your doctor about procedures including the nature and purpose; what you can expect; risks and alternatives.
  • To accept or refuse medical or surgical treatment.
  • To expect that your pain will be managed and controlled.
  • To expect that all written and verbal communication about your treatment be kept private.
  • To be advised if the hospital takes part in or does research that would affect your care or treatment. You have the right to refuse to be involved in such projects.
  • To be informed about advance directives.

Your responsibilities as a patient:

  • To provide complete and correct information about you and your health.
  • To report changes in your health or illness to a health care worker.
  • To report if you do not understand the plan of care, information given to you, or what is expected of you.
  • To follow the treatment plan.
  • For your actions should you refuse treatment or refuse to follow instructions.
  • To see that your health care is paid for as soon as you are able.
  • To follow hospital rules that affect patient care.
  • To respect the rights of other patients and health care workers.
  • To assist in control of noise, smoking and the number of visitors.
  • To respect the property of other persons and the hospital.

You can be assured that:

  • Our staff will provide you with the support and care that you expect.
  • You have the right to direct any concerns about your care to the unit manager or the patient advocate and receive a response to your concerns.
  • Your care is not contingent upon having or not having an advance directive.
  • You have the right to participate in the consideration of ethical issues that arise in your care, including requesting the advice of the Hospital Ethics Committee.
